Dr. Suviraj John MRCSEd MS DNB FNB PGDH&HM PGQM&AHO

Dr. Suviraj John is a Minimal Access Surgeon, with a dedicated interest in digestive disorders, diseases, abdominal wall hernias, bariatric surgery, metabolic syndrome and pelvic floor disorders. He is currently the Vice-Chairman and Academic Coordinator, Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He is a graduate and post-graduate of the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He competed his post-doctoral fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery at GEM Hospital, Coimbatore. He is teaching faculty for the National Board of Examinations Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery Program here. He is also engaged in Proctoring and Mentoring surgeons across India in Laparoscopic Hernia and Colo-Rectal Surgery. Dr. John’s research has studied the benefit of Bariatric-Metabolic Surgery in Asian-Indians in relation to type 2 diabetes mellitus, venous thrombo-embolism, and robotic surgery. 


He is the co-author for India’s first books on Endo-Suturing (2001) and Endo-Hernia Repair (2002). In addition, he has contributed to chapters, editorials and publications in endo-hernia surgery, bariatric-metabolic surgery and prevention of VTE in bariatric surgery in national and international publications. He is co-author of the Asian Venous Thrombo Embolism Guidelines and the lead author for the bariatric surgery section of the same. He is the founder of the Minimal Access Surgical Clinics initiative which is a professional-academic resource for training and practicing minimal access surgeons.


He is an active advocate for patient safety initiatives in India, currently through initiatives to preventing VTE in bariatric surgery and onco-surgery patients, primarily through effecting positive professional culture change. He was instrumental in the inclusion of prevention of Hospital Acquired - Venous Thrombo Embolism (HA-VTE) in the National Patient Safety Implementation Framework (2018-2025), India as a member of the Expert Committee of the National Patient Safety Initiative, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. He is also actively involved in the organisational activities of national surgical and endosurgical societies (Member Executive Committee, North Zone, IAGES) as well as invited scientific faculty for national and international academic events.
