A Groin Hernia happens when internal abdominal tissue or intestine bulges through the lower abdomen. Most Groin Hernias are Inguinal Hernias.
A Ventral Hernia is a bulge through an opening in the muscles on the abdomen. The hernia can occur at a past incision site (Incisional Hernia), or
other weak sites (Primary Abdominal Hernia).
A Hiatus Hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach bulges into the chest through the muscular wall (diaphragm) separating the abdomen and chest .
Large-Complex Hernias usually occur when there is an outward bulge of a large amount of intra-abdominal contents, through weak abdominal area/s, usually following a previous surgery.
Recurrent Hernias are those abdominal hernias that relapse after a previous surgery (Open / Laparoscopic / Robotic Surgery) for Abdominal Hernias.
Hernias presenting at Less Common Sites (e.g. Diaphragmatic Hernias) or those with Rare Presentations are now increasingly detected due to the wider availability of better imaging tests.
We provide the full range of Laparoscopic / Robotic / Open Hernia Surgery, covering the complete spectrum of Abdominal, Pelvic and Hiatus Hernias. We profile a few common hernias and often performed treatment approaches here.
LAPAROSCOPIC HERNIA SURGERY
Hernias are one the most common surgical problems to affect humans. A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue comes out through a defect or area of weakness in the wall of the body. The commonest hernias are groin hernias, umbilical and incisional hernias. Hernia repair surgery returns the displaced organs or tissues to their natural position and seals the defect or weak area. Traditionally, hernia operations and abdominal wall repair was performed by open surgery. For nearly 30 years now, hernia repairs are increasingly repaired by laparoscopic and recently by robotic surgical methods. The benefits of laparoscopic and now robotic surgery in experienced hands are efficient repair, lesser pain, better cosmesis and quicker recovery. Do discuss in detail with your treating surgeon about all issues relating to hernia repair before making any decision about treatment.
ROBOTIC HERNIA SURGERY
Robotic surgery is a recent technique for repairing abdominal hernias, where the surgeon controls surgical instruments robotically from a console. Advantages of robotic hernia surgery are three-dimensional view of the abdomen, precision control of surgical instruments, smaller scars, less pain and potentially quicker recovery. A newer application of robotic hernia surgery has been the reconstruction of the abdominal wall in cases of large-complex abdominal hernias.
OPEN HERNIA SURGERY
Traditionally, abdominal hernia surgery has been performed through open surgical access. This involves usually an incision at the hernia site to reduce the hernia bulge with its contents back into the abdomen and secure the weakened area by sutures (stitches) or a synthetic / biological mesh.

What is a Hernia?
A hernia is an area of weakness in the abdominal wall allowing inner tissues or organs to bulge out. While any part of the abdominal wall could develop a hernia, the commonest sites for hernia are the groin, navel and previous surgical incisions.
What are Common Causes of Hernias?
Some of the common causes of Abdominal Hernias are listed below -
How does a Hernia Present Initially?
A hernia commonly presents as a visible swelling especially on coughing or straining.
What are the Warning Symptoms / Signs for Hernias?
Sharp abdominal pain, inability to pass wind / move bowels and vomiting! Irreducible hernia swelling with local pain that will not go away!
How is Hernia Diagnosed?
This is a medical impression made after complete clinical examination or with modern imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and CT / MRI Scan.
How can a Hernia be Cured?
Hernias can only be repaired by surgery. Eligibility for surgery is dependent on medical and surgical evaluation. Surgery can be done by open, laparoscopic or robotic methods.
Which is the Best Surgery for Hernia Repair?
This is a decision made after complete clinical evaluation, benefit-risk assessment and findings during the operation. While laparoscopic and robotic surgery carry the benefits of smaller abdominal wounds and lesser wound related problems, they carry their unique clinical profile and require medical clearance for general anaesthesia. You should discuss your expectations for the hernia surgery aforehand so that the surgical team can articulate contextual realities in a meaningful way.
Can a Hernia be left Untreated?
A hernia can be kept under watchful observation if an inguinal hernia has no symptoms. However, this must be weighed against the less common but real risk of bowel incarceration and strangulation. This risk is much higher for femoral hernias and thus they must be repaired at the earliest. Hernia trusses or belts can provide some symptomatic relief but do not cure hernias and carry the risk of local nerve injury and hernia incarceration.
